Equipment Appraisal Seminar with Les Miles
I was first introduced to Mr. Leslie H. Miles, FASA, FAPI, CEA, as the calm, professional voice thoroughly expounding details of equipment appraisal on the introductory 12-CD equipment appraisal seminar I received from the American Society of Appraisers. It was only later that I had the pleasure of meeting him in person at an equipment appraisal seminar in San Francisco. Even without knowing his background, which is impressive, one can’t help but be charmed by Les and impressed with his knowledge of and dedication to the equipment appraisal field and ASA MTS in particular. So when I had a chance as a member of NorCal ASA to put together an educational seminar taught by Mr. Miles, I jumped right in.
Bankruptcy Equipment Appraisals: Get Legal Advice Early
Bankruptcy equipment appraisals in the Sacramento and Northern California area are not my favorite part of the equipment and machinery appraisal business; nevertheless, I regularly find myself on the phone with either a business owner or a bankruptcy attorney, working out the details for a Forced Liquidation Value equipment appraisal for an agricultural business, a manufacturing plant, factory, construction or excavating business, or a speciality production shop.
If you’re a business owner wondering whether it’s time to talk to a equipment appraiser regarding an appraisal of your business assets and equipment–whatever kind of business you may be in–do yourself a favor and call a bankruptcy attorney before you call me.
Proposed Update of Valuation Terms
In April, the American Society of Appraisers released a proposal to update the current Definitions of Value approved by the Machinery & Equipment Committee and the American Society of Appraisers Board of Governors.
Over the next few blogs, I’ll share the entire definition list, but today I’d like to concentrate on 2 areas that caught my attention right away:
The first thing I noticed was the insertion of the term “opinion” in most of the definitions. This makes a lot of sense as valuation is not an absolute measurement of value but one arrived at through research and, in the words of former PCAOB Chief Auditor Thomas Rays, “the appropriate application of seasoned professional judgment.”
